Bogus optician operated in Vanderbijlpark for 15 years

A 65 year old Vanderbijlpark man has been arrested by police for posing as an optician for 15 years.

The alleged optician was cutting, fitting and dispensing spectacles in Vanderbijlpark.

Acting Head of Division: Corporate Affairs at the Health Professional Council of SA (HPCSA) Priscillah Sekhonyana said the optician was arrested for fraud and contravening Section 17 (1) of the Health professional Act 56 of 1974.

HPSCA appeals to patients to verify the status of medical practitioners before consulting.

“:The verification can be done through the i-Register  on the HPCSA, website , calling the HPCSA Call Centre or requesting the practitioners practising card, which should have the current year’s date,” said HPCSA.

Sekhonyana encourages members of the community to continue reporting suspicious illegal practices by unregistered persons.
