Vereeniging’s labour department offices were closed today due to COVID 19 cases that manifested last week.

Undisclosed number of Staff members tested positive last week leading to the immediate closure of the Unemployment Benefit Funds (UIF). Business will resume tomorrow. The coronavirus struck at the UIF offices despite the strict adherence to the lockdown rules of putting on masks and keeping social distance.

Applicants are not even allowed inside the offices but were served from outside locked gates. However the long queues that emerge from the UIF offices could be recipe for disaster as people rush to cash in on their UIF.

Stranded unemployed Vaal residents today thronged the UIF offices only to be met with a notice on the gate announcing the closure of the offices.

Another hot spot of COVID 19, a Post Office in Vanderbijlpark where people collect their grants have been closed again. This is the second time this grant collection centre has been closed within a period of two weeks.  Vaal Observer has been checking on this crowded facilities and observed that the people were not keeping social distance and some were not even putting on masks.
