Taxis in Vaal carried out their threats to make full loads on Monday in direct defiance to Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula’s call to adhere with lockdown rules.
Vaal Observer News team visited taxi ranks in Vereeniging, Meyerton and Vanderbijlpark to check on compliance. Gauteng Santaco vehicles were also seen racing through the roads of Vaal, routinely making stops at taxi ranks.
All taxis leaving the ranks were 100% full. As Mbalula was addressing the media today calling for the taxi owners to reconsider their position or else risk the wrath of the long arm of the law, omnibuses were busy criss-crossing Vaal roads full to the brim.
Mbalula locked horns with taxi operators over the R1.135 covid 19 package which the government is offering to the industry. The taxis are also demanding to be allowed to make full loads as opposed to the restrictive 70% lockdown loads.
