Vaal commuters got a relief today after taxis resumed plying their routes. This is a different story from yesterday where they were stranded in the roads after taxis drivers took heed to Top Six Taxi Association’s call to withdraw services in protest of the R1.135 billion allocation by the Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula. Taxi owners are demanding R20 000 per taxi but Mbalula is offering R5000.
The money is meant to cushion the industry from the effects of Covid 19 which attracted the restrictive lockdown. Taxis are currently allowed to carry 70% of their capacity as a precautionary measure to curb the spread of coronavirus.
Mbalula is still in negotiations with the taxi association with the view to strike a compromise. He however ruled out any chances of raising the offer, maintaining that the government was not in any position to increase even a cent of what is already on the table.
