Residents of Sicelo in Midvaal have barricaded R59 with stones in protest of poor services in their area.
Protesters who are mainly youths are demanding jobs, fair allocations of houses and electricity in their area.
The area was swarming with police details when Vaal Observer visited Sicelo.
Midvaal Municipality is being run by the Democratic Alliance. The Mayor of the Municipality Bongani Baloyi has always paraded his local authority as the best run Municipality in Gauteng.
This however was contrasted by residents of Sicelo who felt that only white suburbs were getting preferential treatment while black townships like Sicelo were neglected.
“Black people are not getting good services here in Midvaal, only white are having everything,” complained one Sicelo resident, Sibonile Mahlangu.
Mahlangu said it was disheartening to be without electricity after so many years of independence.
Another resident who only identified himself as Walter said it was ironic for Midvaal to claim to be the best municipality in Gauteng when some areas were struggling to access basic amenities.
“How can we be best we residents of township do not have water and electricity? This is a joke,” said Walter.
Spokesman of Midvaal Municipality Simon Ratlhagane is still to respond to question sent to him by Vaal Observer.
