EML Mayor locks horns with Bophelong residents over electricity cuts

Things are falling apart in Vanderbijlpark’s Bophelong Township.

Protesting residents are demanding the head of Emfuleni Local Municipality Mayor, Gift Moerane for allegedly failing to keep his promise to supply them with electricity from last weekend.

Mayor Moerane allegedly made the promise last week when he met the community to quell earlier protests. The mayor allegedly promised to sourced more transformers to ease shortage of power supplies to one of Vaal’s populous township

The residents escalated their protests this week by blocking roads passing near the township. Motorists travelling to Johannesburg through the N1 Freeway had to divert to over road as residents blocked the road using rocks. Police interventions were ignored by residents who kept on blocking the roads. Vaal Observer’s efforts to get a comment from the Moerane ’spokeswoman Lillian Mofokeng drew blacks. Mofokeng did not respond to questions sent to her.
